In preparation for my wedding in August 2009, I created with website to celebrate the event, and to allow wedding guests to upload and share photos.
I used Ruby on Rails to create the site, which was a great opportunity for me to learn the framework. Prior to this project, I had used RoR very infrequently, and always wanted to learn it more, but hadn’t had a good enough idea for a project. The wedding gave me that opportunity. There is also a small Adobe Flash component (for the file uploads), so I had an opportunity to learn some Flash as well.
In addition, I did a good deal of graphic design work for the wedding, creating designs for invitations, save-the-date postcards, and cards promoting the website, in addition to having beer glasses made as favors for the guests. I taught myself to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and interacted with professional print shops and a glass shop to get everything printed.
